A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do. These days, it means putting in the effort to look sharp and neatly groomed. Whether it’s to impress your boss or a woman, you want to come across as the guy who is capable of paying attention to the details while taking care of the big picture. Or, simply put, why wouldn’t you want to look (and smell) nice?
There’s no need to become a product junkie in order to become the most polished guy in the room. But it doesn’t hurt to get your bathroom up to speed with these grooming essentials.
FOR A CLEAN SHAVE
1. Good quality manual or electric razor
Toss out those blunt, rusty blades and invest in a good quality razor. That will save you from frustrating nicks, burns and skin irritation. Plus you get a closer shave.
2. Pre-shave oil
Pre-shave oil lubricates and protects the skin from burns and cuts. Definitely get some if you have sensitive skin or are prone to ingrown hairs.
3. Shaving cream
A high quality shaving cream has a thicker, almost paste-like consistency. It’s usually pricier but since a little goes a long way, it all works out. This softens skin and allows the razor to glide through more smoothly.
4. Shaving brush
A good quality badger hair brush adds a touch of refinement to your shaving routine. More importantly, the brush helps to build a thicker lather and lifts your whiskers for a closer shave.
A lightweight and moisturising aftershave with soothing ingredients helps to prevent post-shave irritation and infection.
6. Soft-bristle toothbrush
Medium and hard bristles may make you feel like you’re giving your teeth a solid scrub-down and in truth, they are. You’re not only taking off the filth, but the enamel on your teeth as well. This may result in cavities. So opt for soft bristles instead for gentler action. Plus, they have better access around hard-to-reach corners and crevices.
7. Tongue scraper
A tongue scraper is the most effective tool for getting rid of the bacteria and build-up on your tongue — a crucial step since this is the gunk that results in foul-smelling breath.
8. Dental floss
Flossing will eliminate food residue that brushing alone can’t get rid of. It helps to keep your breath fresh and gums healthy.
Mouthwashes instantly freshen up the breath and many contain fluoride to help strengthen teeth as well. If you find that your mouth is overly dry, look for an alcohol-free mouthwash.
A shampoo for your hair type is, needless to say, a necessity. Get a gentle formula that doesn’t dry out hair, since it’s likely that you shampoo daily in Singapore’s hot, humid climate. Focus on massaging shampoo into the hairline, scalp and behind the ears, as that’s where the grime builds up.
No matter how gentle your shampoo is, some of the natural oils from your hair has been stripped off. Replenish the moisture with a nourishing conditioner.
12. Styling product
Tame unruly hair with a good styling product. A hair paste or wax works for short to medium hair, while longer locks can be slicked back with a styling cream.
13. Clarifying shampoo
If you use styling product on a daily basis, you want to add a clarifying shampoo to your routine once a week to get rid of any product residue on the scalp.
For stray eyebrows and whiskers.
15. Nose hair trimmer
Because you don’t want anyone to be staring at your nose in horror when in conversation.
IT’S GOOD TO SMELL GOOD
16. Anti-perspirant or deodorant
This is to keep you from smelling bad.
This is to make you smell delicious. Dab sparingly on pulse points. With cologne, you want to create a sense of intimacy — only those who lean in closer will get a warm whiff.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN
18. Non-drying facial cleanser
Clean your face properly and your skin will thank you for it. Pick a mild cleanser and focus on the oily forehead and nose area when you wash up.
Once or twice a week, make the effort to slough off dead skin cells with a gentle exfoliator. This is a good practice that will give you brighter, clearer, zit-free skin.
Skin needs to be hydrated. Plus, a formula with active ingredients like vitamin C or E combats signs of ageing like lines and sagging.
